Short answer: Google announced on 28 October 2026 that ads in AI Mode will expand to the United Kingdom during Q4 2026. You don’t need a new campaign type: existing Search, Shopping and Performance Max campaigns are automatically eligible. What decides whether your ads show up, and whether they make money, is your targeting, your conversion tracking and the quality of your landing pages.
What is Google AI Mode, and what are ads in AI Mode?
AI Mode is Google’s conversational search experience, where people ask longer questions and follow-ups and get an AI-written answer with links. Ads in AI Mode are Sponsored text or Shopping ads shown inside or alongside those answers when the conversation has commercial intent.
According to Google’s announcement of 28 October 2026 by Shashi Thakur, VP and GM of Google Search Ads, queries in AI Mode are on average three times longer than traditional searches. Google says every ad will be clearly labelled “Sponsored”.
When are ads in AI Mode coming to the UK?
Google says it plans to expand ads in AI Mode to more locales “in Q4 2026”, naming Brazil, Mexico and the United Kingdom. It has not given an exact UK date. In the same announcement, Google started scaling the ads in ten other countries: Australia, Canada, India, Kenya, Malaysia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines and Singapore.
For now, Google Ads Help lists ads within AI Overviews and AI Mode as available in English only, in the United States and a short list of English-speaking markets. The UK is not on that list yet, so expect a gradual rollout rather than an overnight switch.
What about the US and Spain?
In the US, ads in AI Mode are already live, and Google is now launching “multiturn ads”, which can appear in follow-up questions within the same AI Mode conversation. If you advertise to American customers, this is happening now, not next quarter.
Spain is not in Google’s announcement, and Google Ads Help lists English as the only language for ads within AI Overviews and AI Mode. Standard ads can still appear above or below AI Overviews in all markets and languages where AI Overviews are available, according to the same help page. If you run campaigns in Spanish for customers in Marbella, Sotogrande or Cádiz, nothing changes today, but English-language campaigns aimed at UK buyers will be affected once the UK rollout lands.
Do I need to set up a new campaign?
No. Google Ads Help says advertisers “don’t need to create new campaigns or set up separate budgets”. Existing Search, Shopping and Performance Max campaigns take part automatically through the normal auction when they’re relevant.
That cuts both ways. There’s nothing to switch on, but there’s also no separate budget line, and you can’t opt out of AI Mode separately from Search.
How does Google decide which ads show in AI Mode?
Google matches ads in one of two ways, according to Google Ads Help:
- Direct query matching: the search already shows clear commercial intent (Google’s example is “pool vacuum cleaners”), so ads are matched to the query as on a normal results page.
- Contextual matching: the question is exploratory (Google’s example is “why is my pool green and how do I clean it?”), so ads are matched to both the question and the AI answer.
The key point for small businesses is which keywords qualify for which:
| Targeting | Direct query matching | Contextual matching |
|---|---|---|
| Exact and phrase match keywords | Yes | No |
| Broad match on Search | Yes | Yes |
| AI Max for Search | Yes | Yes |
| Performance Max | Yes | Yes |
| Shopping campaigns | Yes | Yes |
So if your account runs only exact and phrase match, you’ll miss the longer, exploratory questions that make AI Mode different. Moving to broad match or AI Max opens those up, but it also widens the net, which needs tighter controls on your spend.
Will it cost more, and can I see the results separately?
There is no extra charge, but there’s also no separate report. Google Ads Help says ads in AI Overviews and AI Mode use the same auction and cost-per-click or conversion-based bidding as standard Search ads. Performance is included in aggregate in your normal campaign and search terms reports.
In practice, you won’t see a line that says “AI Mode spend”. You will need to watch your search terms report for longer, conversational queries and judge whether they turn into enquiries.

Does paying for ads help my business appear in Google’s AI answers?
No. Google Ads Help states that organic AI Overviews and AI Mode responses are generated independently, and buying ads doesn’t influence them. Whether your site is cited organically doesn’t affect your ad eligibility either.
That means paid and organic AI visibility are two separate jobs. Ads buy you a Sponsored slot. Being cited in the answer itself depends on clear, useful content, which is the work covered in our complete guide to GEO. For organic visibility, the Search Console generative AI performance report shows impressions of your pages in AI features.
What are AI explainers, and should I worry about them?
AI explainers are short pieces of text written by Google’s Gemini models that can appear beside an ad to explain how it relates to the search. Google Ads Help says they can draw on the user’s query, the AI answer and public sources, including your website. You can’t write, edit, approve or opt out of them.
This is the one part of AI Mode ads you don’t control directly. The best protection is a website that states your services, prices, locations and policies clearly and accurately, so Google has correct material to work from. Our web team can help get those pages right.
Checklist: get your Google Ads account ready for AI Mode
Work through this before the UK rollout reaches your account:
- Check your conversion tracking. Make sure the Google tag or offline conversion imports record real enquiries, calls and sales, not page views. Smart Bidding can only optimise towards what you measure.
- Review your match types. List which campaigns use only exact and phrase match. Decide where testing broad match or AI Max makes sense and where you want to stay tight.
- Build your negative keyword list. Google confirms negative keywords and brand exclusions still apply in AI Mode. Add terms for jobs you don’t do, areas you don’t serve and searches for free information.
- Read your search terms report weekly. Look for longer, question-style queries and check whether they convert.
- Update your landing pages. Make prices, service areas, opening hours and policies clear and current, because Google may use your site to write AI explainers.
- Keep product feeds fresh. If you sell online, check Merchant Center titles, descriptions, images, prices, shipping and returns match your website.
- Keep budgets flexible on winners. Google recommends room on high-performing campaigns rather than capping everything at the same level.
- Separate UK, US and Spanish campaigns. Different languages and rollout dates mean each market needs its own settings and reporting.
- Don’t stop the organic work. Ads won’t get you cited in AI answers, so keep improving the content that does.

What should a small business do now?
Start with measurement, then targeting, then content. If your conversion tracking is weak, any AI-powered targeting will spend money learning from the wrong signals. Once tracking is reliable, test broader targeting on one campaign with a clear budget and a strong negative list, and compare enquiries and cost per lead with what you had before.
If you’d rather not do this alone, our paid media team manages Google Ads and Meta campaigns for small businesses in the UK, Spain and the US. You can compare options on our digital packages page, read more about our approach to paid media strategy, or book a call to review your account before AI Mode ads reach the UK.
FAQs
Are ads in Google AI Mode live in the UK yet?
Not yet. Google said on 28 October 2026 that the UK is planned for Q4 2026, without a specific date. Google Ads Help does not yet list the UK for ads within AI Mode.
Can I opt out of ads in AI Mode?
No. Google Ads Help says you can’t target ads only to AI Overviews or AI Mode, or opt out of them separately from Search. Negative keywords and brand exclusions still apply.
Do exact match keywords show in AI Mode?
Yes, but only when the search already shows clear commercial intent. Exact and phrase match keywords aren’t eligible for contextual matching on longer, exploratory questions.
Is AI Mode advertising more expensive?
Google says there’s no extra charge. Ads use the same auction and the same cost-per-click or conversion-based bidding as standard Search ads, and you’re only charged for valid clicks.
Will my ads in AI Mode show in Spanish?
Not at the moment. Google Ads Help lists English as the only language for ads within AI Overviews and AI Mode. Google says it will expand to more languages over time but hasn’t given dates.
What are multiturn ads?
Multiturn ads are ads that can appear in follow-up questions within an AI Mode conversation. Google launched them in the US on 28 October 2026.
Does advertising on Google help my business appear in AI Overviews?
No. Google says paid ads don’t influence organic AI Overviews or AI Mode answers. Organic citations depend on your content and how well Google’s systems understand it.
